Oooh don’t you just love a good car boot sale? My local in Chiswick is always a treat and one of the best in the South East, they say! It’s always full of mid-century buys but it’s only on once a month. To get my fix the rest of the time, I also enjoy a browse online and there are two sites where I can easily while away the hours. First up is Winter’s Moon. Founder, Julia, has a background in textiles and loves colour and pattern. She has a beady eye for second-hand pieces and has also designed her own furniture and textiles range. She styles and photographs everything in her warehouse in Chichester, and very nicely too…

The collection is constantly changing but you’re always likely to find a mix of vintage, recycled and handmade. I love the quirky statement chairs, 50’s kitchenalia and lamp shades made from retro fabrics. I’ve got my eye on her yellow, bespoke formica-top table.

Another dreamy site is The OK Corral. Brainchild of the arty Joy Joliffe and partner (who also run the fabulous Random Retail – scrummy screen printed textiles). Both jumble sale fanatics, they decided to set up an online shop when they ran out of space for all their wondrous finds…

They only stock the very best and their turnover of product is speedy, so keep dropping by. You will also find jelly moulds, enamelware, postcards and toast racks. Their prices are very competitive too with most items under a tenner! How old school is that red picnic tray with foldaway legs!? I’m hankering after the sunny yellow flask, perfect for a brew of Lady Grey…on a summer’s day. – Alice

HOT SHOP: Laurette

April 8, 2011

Listen very carefully, for I will say zees only once: French shop Laurette is now online and shipping abroad, making small, quirky French brands much easier to access from exotic, glamorous, remote locations. Like Croydon.

There are cute BONNE NUIT wall stickers from Mimi Lou, bed linen and accessories from Airdeje, linens from Jack n’a qu’un Oeil and cushions from La Cerise Sur Le Gateau. I like the Russian doll cushions made using Liberty fabrics…

…and the vintage ‘Brocante‘ area, where there are retro lamps, sleek chairs and industrial filing cabinets…

I’m currently redecorating our dining room / home office, so this lovely desk caught my eye:

It’s a compact copy of the kind of retro desk I’ve been ogling on eBay for many months! – Ellie

Heal’s 200 Years of Design and Inspiration is a romp through history, telling the story of London’s most iconic furniture store from 1810 when it first opened to the present day. Being a complete interiors addict, this is just the kind of coffee table tome I love – full of retro adverts, beautiful furniture and brilliant design splashed across every page.

heals1There are fascinating photographs from the past, showing mattresses being stuffed and delivered in the 1890s, Heal’s wartime Home Guard lining up in the 1940s, and photos of machinists sewing parachutes during the war.

heals2I really enjoyed looking at all the 1950s and 60s images in this book – there are Lucienne Day fabrics to admire and stylish adverts that ooze sophistication.

The book looks at key people who have contributed to Heal’s over the years, from John Harris Heal, who launched a mattress-making business back in 1810, to Terence Conran and Orla Kiely who have designed for Heal’s in recent years. The design of this book is perfect – there’s enough text to convey a good amount of interesting information, but it’s the images that take the lead so the balance between words and pictures is bang on for a design book. I particularly like the black silhouette illustrations, borrowed from the V&A archive.

Picture 1But I think my favourite thing in the whole book is this little plate about ‘good taste’ from a vintage Heal’s leaflet. It’s such a good motto! Heal’s 200 Years of Design and Inspiration will be launched on Monday. – Ellie
