Gabrielle is a designer who lives with her husband and little dog in a rural cottage in Surrey. She makes cards, cute notebooks and plantable bunting (!) amongst other things. Her business is called The Green Gables. She only uses FSC certified paper, works with local printers and suppliers, uses recycled packaging and all orders are shipped from her local village Post Office. Her cheery post card designs landed in my inbox this week and I love the simple illustrations that feature some of my favourite vintage objects…

They’re a mere £3.50 for a mixed set of 6 and if you don’t feel like giving them away then why not use as a mini piece of wall art? Lovely. – Alice

HOT BUY: Typewriter stickers

February 17, 2010

Ever wished your laptop was as pretty as a vintage typewriter? I love oldskool typing, but when it comes to sending emails, surfing the net or saving work, clearly a rickety old Corona is not much help. Laptops are practical, but they just aren’t romantic. At a typewriter, I’m a 1940s novelist – glamorous, calm, creative – with red lipstick and pearls. At my laptop, I’m just another stressed-out caffeine-fuelled Londoner with deadlines and slow broadband. Enter, stage left, the tonic to all my woes…vintage typewriter stickers to vintage-ify your laptop! (APPLAUSE AND CHEERING)

Ok, so it’s a little weird. And not QUITE the same as a real typewriter. But fix the stickers either side of your mouse pad and cover the letter keys and it’s as good as it’s gonna get, folks. A set of stickers is £14.95 from Rockett St George, which has lots of other lovely new buys to check out, too…

This elegant cutlery looks ceramic, but it’s plastic – posh picnic cutlery. I LOVE it – it’s perfect for weddings/parties/packed lunches…

And have a peep at these stylish LONDON KILLS ME cushions and slate place mats. A bit Charlene Mullen-esque me thinks – VERY nice.

Rockett is also stocking some new glass chemistry flask ‘vases’ (on the right) which would look cool filled with flowers. I recently did a little photo shoot for Ideal Home with a glass chemistry beaker as a pen pot (see left!) so perhaps Science-Lab-Chic is on the horizon…?! Worth noting: you can buy inexpensive lab equipment from a school supplier if this funky look tickles your fancy!

Finally, check out this stunning Ostrich wallpaper, from Turner Pocock at Rockett. So fabulous. As is the gorgeously-worn-yet-beautiful-in-a-shabby-chic-way pink chair in this shot. ‘Enough!’ she cried, ‘TOO much temptation for one morning’! And anyway, when the first person to third person switch occurs, it’s often a sign it’s time to wrap things up, she thought to herself. – Ellie

Typewriters are cool. They’re so cool. They’re, like, really cool. Check out this print. Isn’t it cool? Does anybody mind if I over-use the word cool in this post? No? Cool.

keep calm and type onI think this is what we in the business refer to as a ‘Micro Trend’. The kind of trend that you KIND of think MIGHT be a trend, but then, when you come to find some trendy things that are part of the trend, you find, like, three things. Hence the term Micro. If it was a TREND trend – as in, horses, owls etc – there would be thousands of trendy trend-related designs fighting to be featured – indeed, we’d be auditioning all day and only a select few would make the final cut – the creme de la creme (alas still no accents, apologies) de la trend.

typewriterOf course, there’s always good old Etsy – which can, rain or shine, be relied upon to provide fantastic trend-tastic finds, even for the most obscure Micro Trend when you’re really scraping the trend dregs at the bottom of the murky, miserable trend barrel. I love the typewriter rubber stamp, the typewriter notebook, the typewriter rings, and indeed, erm, the typewriter.

American shop Three Potato Four has a lovely collection of vintage typewriters (the lovely but extortionate variety), which you could carry in a typewriter bag and, while you type, you could wear a typewriter T-shirt, while admiring a lovely typewriter print.

vintage-typewriter-keysWow – I think this might actually be promoted from Micro Trend status to TREND trend status, as there are, now I come to think of it, a few more typewriters around than I thought. Hmm, not that many though. Might just have to finish this post with a repeat of the image I opened with, but in a different colour. Cop out, I know, but times are hard. Just hope nobody notices. – Ellie
